In 1832, William Winsor and Henry Newton founded Winsor & Newton out of Henry Newton’s home in London. Their involvement with the artist community, and interest in painting, spurred Winsor and Newton to create new and innovative artist materials. In 1837, Winsor and Newton introduced Chinese White, an opaque zinc white for watercolor artists. The company was recognized by the Royal family early in its existence, being appointed as artists’ colourmen to Queen Victoria in 1841. Winsor and Newton has continued to receive the endorsement of successive Royal Households, beginning with the reception of their first Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria in 1841. This warrant allows them to be styled "By Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales", and to display the Prince of Wales badge of three feathers on their premises, delivery vehicles, stationary, advertisements, and their products. With its long history and continued success, Winsor and Newton takes their ecological footprint very seriously in the 21st century. Only FSC sourced wood is used for all Winsor and Newton brush handles, easels, and canvas stretchers. All the natural hair products come from sustainable sources, and are by-products of other industries. The company has also reduced the amount of water used in their factory, resulting in a savings of 1.2 million litres of water annually. [ visit manufacturer website ] |
